A Trusted Partnership: Smeura Adopts aniSYS for Optimal Management
It's our utmost pleasure that the world’s largest animal shelter, the Smeura in Romania, decided for aniSYS as their management software to trust in. It’s a sad record to be precise, but exactly because of the urging challenges to tackle, we were furthermore delighted to gain with these demands and make aniSYS even more to what we stand for: Having more time for animal welfare and to become more efficient as an individual and as a project.
What We Have Achieved Together
One of the challenges was to optimize the weekly transport of the protégés from the Smeura to partner animal shelters. The aim was to handle this complex process, from the expression of interest through to departure, without a single email, text message or even a sheet of paper and to optimally connect the teams in Germany and Romania despite the great distance and different languages.

Another aim was to reduce the number of paper files and long journeys across the animal shelter grounds. Thanks to the mobile use of aniSYS, animals can be recorded, or their files updated at any location within the animal shelter premises or directly outside. For example, the most important animal data, a characterization and some pictures for the animal's internet profile can be recorded directly. This eliminates all walking and the time needed to transfer the information from the docket to a local program. In the Smeura's own veterinary clinic, treatments can also be digitally recorded and documented immediately in future, together with all treatment documents, and are available to any authorized person from the moment they are saved.
The flexible networking option between organizations also means that animal files, including medical data, photos and videos, can be automatically and directly transferred between animal shelters that use aniSYS .

Tierhilfe Hoffnung - Hilfe für Tiere in Not e.V. is the sponsor of the Smeura in Romania, the largest animal shelter in the world according to the Guinnes Book of Records and currently home to more than 6,000 dogs, including around 1,800 puppies and kittens, as well as 300 cats. On site, 125 employees look after the welfare of all the animals. The animal sanctuary covers an area of 6 hectares in an extensive wooded area and is located around 120 km from Bucharest in the small town of Pitesti. The organization was founded in 2000 by Ute Langenkamp in Germany. Since then, the team has been rescuing and caring for Romanian street dogs that would otherwise be killed.
To prevent more and more puppies from being born, the project offers free neutering for the animals of the Romanian population at the Smeura clinic. With the help of converted ambulances (neutering mobiles), neutering campaigns are also repeatedly organized in various locations in the district. In 2022, a total of 21,108 neuterings were carried out in this way.
